Edan Czarobski

Who doesn’t love a Milkshake Mass? A Chapel Crawl that began as a fun dorm challenge to attend Mass in every residence hall chapel ultimately brought sophomore Edan Czarobski closer to a friend, to his community, and to God:

“Participating in the worship of so many communities gave me a rare glimpse into the spiritual life across campus—something truly unique to Notre Dame, where chapels and daily Masses abound.”

During Advent, we hear about the Holy Family’s trek across the country to Bethlehem, which was especially challenging given Mary’s advanced pregnancy. As we make our way through this sacred season, how might we accept the graces that come with deepening our prayer and engaging with the community around us?

    • Our daughter and her then boyfriend (now fiancé), who lived in Duncan Hall, also completed this Dorm Chapel Mass challenge. What an amazing opportunity, unique to Notre Dame. I truly think these Sacred Stories during Advent are the most spiritual and uplifting part of Advent for me.

    • Yes! Ziggy was my husband, Eddie’s uncle! So that would make him Edan’s great uncle.

  5. The tradition is called Las Posadas and takes place in Mexico and other parts of Latin America, where people go from house to house to ask for lodging, with the celebration culminating in a feast with food, drink, and often hot chocolate. This is during Christmas time.
The Advent season is a wonderful time of preparing our hearts to receive the baby Jesus. Part of the preparedness is communing with each other, sharing traditions and joy. Much like the Mass crawl in the sacred story.

  7. I wish I had attempted the same when I was a SMC student! I would’ve loved to have seen each and everyone of the beautiful chapels in each dorm while receiving those graces in attending each Mass!

  11. What a great tradition! I wish I, and my fellow Sorin College dorm mates, did it when we were undergraduates in the early 1980’s. While we did attend other dorm masses on occasion, Sunday Night Mass at 10PM in the Sorin Hall Chapel, often celebrated by Monk, who was our Assistant Rector at the time, was a time of calm and quiet reflection. I still fondly recall those memories. The Chapel Crawl appears to be an outstanding way of expanding both your sphere of friendship with others, and strengthening your faith through active engagement. Thanks for sharing!

  21. I think this is an incredible story of faith and the strength you gain when you attend Mass. A St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, NJ, we had a Mass every day but in the 50’s the school had no dorms. We visited ND about 12 years ago and never realized you had so many dorms and never even guessed you had Masses in every dorm. You are attending a GREAT University with outstanding traditions. Students like you keep those traditions alive. Well done!
