Badin Hall: Chapel of St. Stephen

“I will fix a place for my people Israel; I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further disturbance.” (2nd Samuel 8)

Our final stop in our journey through Advent is the newest chapel on Notre Dame’s campus, the Chapel of St. Stephen in the newly renovated Badin Hall.

The first reading from today’s liturgy features King David, who greatly desired to build a house for the Lord. The Lord assures David in a dream that God himself will build a house for him.

Tonight, as we will hear at Christmas Eve Mass, Jesus will be born as a homeless child, in a stable, looking for a place to rest and finding very little. Jesus comes to us on Christmas, looking for a dwelling place in the temple of our hearts.

As we ponder the great beauty of this chapel and the great love and care God expresses in today’s scripture reading, let us ask ourselves: how can we make a home for God in our hearts this Christmas?

  12. Hannah, your video was the best way to finish this Advent journey for me. I’m also from Albuquerque and attended Notre Dame some 35 years ago so when you said you were Albuquerque it made me smile. I have vivid memories of the Campus before Christmas break, walking to the grotto to light a candle and pray for myself and my friends during finals week. I don’t know if you will see these comments but I hope you love your time at Notre Dame and that you and your family have a blessed Christmas. Feliz Navidad.

  18. I lived for the best two years of my time at ND in Badin Hall, back when it was a men’s dorm (1967-1969). The rowdies were on the top floor but we were better. I lived in room 337, next to where Father Hesburgh had lived. I saw the new chapel from the outside earlier this year but could not get in. It looks great. But piety is meaningless if it does not strengthen a commitment to serving others. I’ve spent my life taking care of poor disadvantaged kids with developmental disabilities. I hope the current Badin residents will also commit to a lifetime of service, not just meaningless piety and financially successful business careers. The Grotto is just a few steps away from Badin Hall.

  19. Jesus was not born as a homeless child. Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem to register as all people had to do. Most people could not find a room, do to all the people coming to register. Joseph and Mary were fortunate to find a stable, that was warm. They were not the only people turned away from the inn.
Joseph was a carpenter and had means to support Mary and Jesus.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
