Welsh Family Hall: Chapel of St. Kateri Tekakwitha

“The desert and the parched land will exult.” (Isaiah 31)

As we ponder Isaiah’s beautiful image of the desert in full bloom, our Advent pilgrimage brings us to the chapel of Welsh Family Hall, dedicated to St. Kateri Tekakwitha.

Born in the mid-seventeenth century, Kateri Tekakwitha was a member of the Mohawk Native American tribe. Kateri goes by the title “Lily of the Mohawks.” This title refers to Kateri’s reception of the Gospel. Kateri’s faith inspired many other members of the Mohawk tribe to accept Christ. Through Kateri’s example, Christianity began to bloom in the New World.

As we ponder the words of the Gospel today, let us ask ourselves: what desert in our hearts does God want to restore to full bloom today?

  3. Thank you so much. I pray to Saint Kateri everyday to watch over our daughter and pray for the soul of Monsenior Lenz who lead her canonization. He was a good priest who lead the Negro and American Indian Office in Georgetown. Thank you Notre Dame.
