Keough Hall: Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe

“A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet.” (Revelation 12)

On today’s feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, our Advent journey through Notre Dame’s chapels takes us to the chapel named after Our Lady of Guadalupe in Keough Hall.

Mary continues to be a great sign to God’s people throughout history, to guide us even in the midst of difficulty, like her appearance in Guadalupe, Mexico to Juan Diego. Juan Diego met with resistance from the local bishop, and others who asked him to doubt that this vision of Mary was true. But Juan Diego persisted in his faith. Thus, his faith became a great sign for others—the miraculous image of Mary on his tilma that still hangs today in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

Let us ask ourselves today: how open are we to the signs God is giving us? Do we hold onto them in faith, despite resistance?

  1. Thanks so much for the reminder of Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast. I had the privilege of being in Mexico City and seeing this miraculous picture… I was touched deeply by the sight and by the pilgrims kneeling as they approached the great picture of Our Lady of Guaddalupe. thanks to the ND Alumni for providing this helpful daily spiritual nourishment.

God bless and keep you all in his Loving Care!

  3. my family has also been devoted to the Lady of Guadalupe. It started when my father was terminally in 1997 and from that day onwards i was able to devote my daily prayers to her. I was very fortunate that i was able to visit her in march, 2006 in mexico and a ray of strong light flashed into my eyes during mass and this light was so blinding and i know from that time onwards that the BVM has touched my life and still doing it to this day. my husband did not see this light that i was telling him at that time but i prayed fervently to the BVM to guide me in all aspects of my life. one of my staff had asked for prayers for her daughter-in-law to start conceiving and i brought her home a novena prayer and also the picture of the Lady. she prayed to her daily and into that december 12, 2006, her first grandchild, a baby girl was born and they named her alexandra mari, the marie in honor of the BVM. that bay is now 12 years old today. this beautiful story and many more that has happened to my life and to the other people i have prayed for is a testament that Our QUEEN MOTHER listens to each and every prayer in our hearts.

  4. Upon return from my Peace Corps service (2 yrs. in Guayaquil, Ecuador 1964-1966) I stopped in Mexico City at the Church housing Our Lady of Guadalupe’s memorial. 50 years later, as I write up faith-sharing stories for our 24 grandchildren, and with the gift of hindsight, I have come to realize how protected and blessed I was (and am!) because of the work of my personal guardian angel, and Our Lady of Guadalupe, and my patron saint, St. Michael. My natural Mother, (Helen Bokor Luea) said a daily rosary for myself and my 5 brothers and sisters her whole life. Indeed we were protected and helped in so many ways. Thank you Blessed Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe! Mike Luea ’64 ND

  5. Beautiful reflection and a nice way to remember Keough and the lovely chapel there. Have memories of special Masses there while son Jason ’16 lived in Keough. May Our Lady of Guadalupe watch over the men of Keough, past and present in a special way.
