The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes
Jesus said to his disciples: “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy.” (Luke 21)
Today’s Scripture for our reflection comes from Luke’s Gospel. Jesus said to his disciples, “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy.”
Here, at Notre Dame’s Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, where we begin our Advent journey, the entire Notre Dame family of faith is constantly being held in prayer. This ceaseless vigil of prayers is represented in the banks of candles that fill the Grotto’s cave. In lighting these candles, we stay awake and keep a prayerful watch for one another here at the Grotto.
As we begin our Advent preparations, let us consider: how can we shake our drowsy hearts to become hearts that are alert and responsive to God?
Go to morning mass every day
I look forward to journeying through Advent by way of the beautiful Notre Dame Chapels and student hall representatives. May you all have a blessed Holy Season!

Thank you for kicking off these Advent reflections with Our Lady’s Grotto. It brought me so close to my Dad (Class of ‘50) who passed away 9 years ago.
This is a privilege; I am grateful to the Notre Dame Community for the opportunity to pray with you during this unique season of grace. Thank you!
What a beautiful way to start the day reflecting on God’s love at the chapels o Notre Dame
Thank you for your daily reflections!
Thank you & May God Bless our ND faith family this Christmas
Thank you for enriching my faith with your daily words this Advent Season. May God continue to guide and bless the Notre Dame family.
As we begin this advent season, wake up our hearts and watch over the students, faculty and families of ND. Guided through prayer, let us shift our hearts and minds to honor and serve those most in need. God bless.
Amen, Julie! 🙏🏻
I look forward to the journey through Advent. What a beautiful way to celebrate Advent.
For me the Grotto is the most precious! I have lit many a candle there with my husband Leonard J. Pieroni, Jr. ’60, and a few times after his death at age 57. Whenever I know someone going there, I always ask them to light a candle for Len! Now with two of his grandchildren there – Allison Pieroni and Len Pieroni IV I know many a candle will be lit in his memory.
May the Notre Dame Community under the careful love of Mary , Our Lady of Lourdes bear Christ in their hearts, their minds and their souls this Advent. Mother of God embrace us as your children. Amen
Thank you for that beautiful reflection, Maureen. You are an inspiration to many!
As my trust and respect for the Cstholic church and its leaders grow weaker and weaker, my love of Jesus, Mary, and Notre Dame grows stronger and stronger. Thank you for your daily gospel and prayers.
I followed last Advent and the journey through all of the chapels was so peaceful and beautiful. Looking forward to this year’s Advent journey again. Thank you for providing this, it is truly a blessing.
One of the greatest blessings our family has received is having my grandson as a Notre Dame freshman. The witness of the members of the Notre Dame community, past and present, is a joy to us all. Thank you for sharing the inspirations of your spirits. What a wonderful gift .
Advent is such a special time of waiting for the time when we all meet our Savior. Daily we can ask Him to lead us on our journey.
We can make our Lord a constant companion, keeping ever mindful of His place in our lives.
Thank you for the privilege of joining with you in this daily reflection during Advent as a Sister of the Holy Cross I frequent the Lourdes Shrine each time I visit St.Mary’s for me it is a very sacred and hallowed shrine. Siter Emily C.S.C.
What a beautiful way to enhance anticipation during the season of Advent.
We are eternally grateful that our only daughter and first son have been given the privilege to be part of the Notre Dame family. This opportunity in life no words in the English language can express for our hearts are filled with unspeakable joy. Blessed be the name of the LORD. Our mother Mary (Notre Dame) watches over her children with such love which is so palpable any time we visit the campus. This advent we pray that our path in life is guided gently by her maternal love as we anticipate with great joy the second coming of our LORD. God bless our Notre Dame family.
Thank you for this beautiful series…as we wait in joyful anticipation for Christ these daily reflections empower us to prepare our hearts.
God bless all who wait in hope! Notre Dame, Our Mother, pray for us!
Thank you for sharing these beautiful chapels and scripture. What a wonderful way to start the day.
From my first days at ND 50 years ago, the Grotto became a source of strength, peace and hope and it remains so anytime I have the great good fortune to return. MJF ‘72
I just love these daily meditations from the various chapels on campus! They are one of many beautiful blessings that we’re enjoying because our son is a first year ‘domer’. Wonderful way to experience the peace of our Lord during the busy Advent season.
After listening to these messages for Advent, I have found peace and tranquility. The music especially, is beautiful. Who are the musicians and the name of the musical piece used?
