Farley Hall: Chapel of St. John the Evangelist

“And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1)

Our Advent pilgrimage brings us to the Farley Hall chapel, where we can see a small version of the Visitation statue by Ivan Mestrovic. Many of us are familiar with the full-size version of his work which stands outside the Eck Visitor Center near the main entrance to Notre Dame’s campus.

The Visitation is a common theme of this Advent season, because we are waiting, like Elizabeth, for God’s salvation to arrive in our lives. Elizabeth is a model for the Christian in Advent not only because of her anticipation but also because of her attentiveness.

Elizabeth is able to recognize God’s arrival into the world through Mary because she has remained faithful and vigilant, attuned to God’s work in her life. Thus, she joyful greets her cousin who brings the Christ child to her.

As we spend some time in prayer here with this statue of Elizabeth and Mary in this chapel, let us ask ourselves: How are we attentive to God’s work in our lives?
