Danny Schermerhorn

Join junior computer engineering major Danny Schermerhorn as he mentors the next generation of Baumer Hall Buccaneers through a weekly faith and accountability group.

“After struggling through my first year, I asked our rector, Father Robert Lisowski, if I could help start a student-led men’s discernment and accountability group in our residence hall. With the help of my friends Bryce and Nico, we named the group the Band of Buccaneers, after our hall mascot.”

This Advent season, we should remember that we are not called to make this faith journey alone. By leaning on each other, we grow more deeply in our faith and more fully commit ourselves to the mission of living out Christ’s joy.

  1. Sounds like an excellent counterweight to the pro-abortion radical agenda of some faculty members. Go Irish – keep Our Lady authentically Catholic!

  2. Thank you very much. Wonderful memories of the times my husband and I spent there. My favorite place besides the football area is the Grotto.
Went there every morning whenever we were in South Bend. Cherish these days. You will never regret them. Enjoy the gift of going to ND. God Bless you, especially during the difficult days that come along. ND will be some of your best memories. God Bless. ☘️

  4. Good on you, Danny, for paying your high school experience forward by forming the Band of Buccaneers for the benefit of Baumer Hall residents. St. Francis’ quote, “It is in giving that we receive” comes to mind. It seems obvious from the pictures you shared that you and many other young men in Baumer Hall are benefitting from your efforts to ensure access to an active community of faith filled mentorship and support. This is quite a legacy, and is clearly God at work through your cooperation with Him. May He continue to richly bless all members of the Band of Buccaneers, and inspire other Baumer residents to also join.

  5. Guy from the ND Club of Northern NJ here. Stories like yours help older folks like myself realize that our society is not lost – that there are fantastic young people like you at ND, and, I’m sure, other places. God Bless – enjoy Advent & Christmas with your family & friends.

  6. Danny,

I am hopeful for young men after seeing your video. In world that infuses all of us with useless distraction it is difficult to connect and teach the value of faith filled relationship. Connection to other and Jesus is the only thing in life that leaves you joyful or at least less lonely. Men in particular need to live more connected lives . So glad you are doing this.

  8. Beautiful work Danny. Thank you for sharing.
I will remember this reflection as a gentle reminder to pause, turn to the Lord when I experience moments of frustration or desolation. As Peter said, “to whom shall we go?”
Peace & Advent Blessings to you and your family.

  15. Tom from the ND Club of Central NJ. Danny, your story turned me on. I am 79. Got my M.S. Degree in Mathematics in August 1972. I was at ND for 5 summers. Being 79 I often wonder why I’m still here. I need to lean on other Catholic people to help me navigate the remaining years to spend on Earth. Thank you and good luck, Danny.

  19. What a great testimony and group you formed. Could you and your group keep my 20-year-old son in your prayers as he’s struggling to make good friends and needs those with faith? Thank you and God bless you.
