Santiago Schnell

Some of the best things in life happen just by saying “yes” to God’s call. Santiago Schnell’s journey to Notre Dame was more than a career move; it became a vocation. The William K. Warren Foundation Dean of the College of Science joined the faculty in 2021 after he felt God’s calling on Notre Dame Avenue.

“Como académico católico, creo que cada persona tiene un propósito único dentro del plan divino de Dios. Cuando ofrecemos nuestro trabajo diario y responsabilidades ordinarias con alegría y sencillez, se convierten en oportunidades para santificar nuestras vidas e iluminar el mundo con fe y amor.”

“As a Catholic scholar, I believe every person has a unique purpose within God’s divine plan. When we offer our daily work and ordinary duties with joy and simplicity, they become opportunities to sanctify our lives and illuminate the world with faith and love.”

This Advent season, as we prepare for Christmas, we remember the extraordinary moment when God became man. Yet, God chose to work through the ordinary lives of Mary and Joseph, calling them to say “yes” to his divine plan. Jesus, too, embraced an ordinary life of work and prayer during his “silent years.” Their example reminds us to find the sacred in our own daily lives and to see that even small, ordinary tasks can lead us to holiness.

  3. Santiago,
This is such a beautiful reflection, especially as I prepare for my “ordinary” Thursday, not of science, but of babysitting. I’m so glad you said yes to our Lady and her university. Your witness is an inspiration to me and I’m sure countless others. God bless you and your family during this holy season. Ann

  15. Muchos Gracias, Dean Snell…
I believe, as you do, that science and faith are NOT mutually exclusive – indeed they complement each other in a way that allows us to see Christ in all things, on all days, everywhere. So eloquently stated, I feel sooo lucky that you heeded Mary’s call and are a Domer!
    Feliz Navidad…

  16. Dean Schnell exemplifies genuine Catholic intellectual leadership, a quality rarely found among academics and administrators in universities of the Western world.
