Hannah Hidalgo

When everything you’re used to relying on is taken away, you’re left with only your foundation. During COVID, junior Hannah Hidalgo used the unfamiliar solitude to deepen her personal relationship with Christ, to take her faith from routine to real. Now, as she juggles college life, academics and being a standout guard on the women’s basketball team, she stands firmly on that foundation.

“I’m playing for something bigger than myself. Basketball is a tool, a vessel that I use, but it isn’t my whole identity. It’s not going to determine how the Lord sees me. My foundation in Christ keeps me grounded. Leading team Bible studies now, I remind myself—and my teammates—to find time to rest, to give glory to Christ, and to focus on what matters.

“Advent reminds me of that same truth: in the stillness, God is already at work. When we strip away the extra and make room for God, we discover something new about God and ourselves. What is something that each of us can strip away to make more room for God right now?”

  16. Dearest Hannah,
    Covid isolation was a special spiritual time of growth for my sweetheart husband of 60 yrs and I too.
    We cherished the time spent reading 100s of books, watching golf tournaments on TV, even though we were tennis players during our marriage, We also enjoyed watching Coach Ivy become a wonderful coach during her first years following Muffet!
    You “wowed” us with your steals and on court mental awareness. He coached our daughter’s park district team
    And enjoyed her varsity team in the lst years of Title 9.I was a Jr. High referee.
    Your greatest gift of all is realizing God’s infinite love and thank you for sharing it with us this Advent.
    Everything you need in life is within you.
    Best wishes in your life, whatever path you choose in the future.
    Go Irish!
    God bless you always and in all ways!

  18. Hannah,
    The question that you asked each and everyone of us was the question that we all need to ask ourselves. “What is something that each of us can strip away to make more room for God right now?”
    Especially during Advent, we always need to be reminded that;
    We’re all innkeepers who decide if there’s room for Jesus.

    Thank you for your inspiration!

  24. Beautiful Sacred Story reflection, Hannah – thank you so much for sharing! It’s amazing how, when we are intentional about making room for God, he can show us an even deeper level of who he is in our lives. I’m glad you were able to take your faith from routine to real, and you strengthened your relationship with Christ, and that journey was highlighted in this Sacred Story reflection. It’s exciting to know you know who you are and whose you are outside of basketball because basketball is not your whole identity, as you mentioned. Kudos to you, young lady, for your relationship with Christ and for wisdom beyond your years. Merry Christmas, and a wonderfully blessed Happy New Year to you and your family. May God continue to bless you richly.
